For everyone TV review: Rita
In this critically acclaimed Danish comedy–drama series, Rita is a charismatic, acerbic secondary school teacher in a small community in Denmark. She is also the single mother of three children, and dysfunctional, messy, flawed, contradictory, believable and utterly relatable.
Rita has a progressive storyline and features serious issues like dyslexia, coming out, school truancy, foster care, bullying and abortion, with none of them dealt with in predictable ways.
Rita herself sometimes has a problem with authority, which leads to comedic moments and a great deal of drama, and her sense of humour can rub people up the wrong way, but it’s all the more reason why we end up rooting for her all the time.
In a strong ensemble cast, where all the characters are convincing, it is protagonist Rita, flawed but charming, who will have you pulling out your old flannelette shirts.
Settle in – there are five seasons, and, unlike so many cracking series, it doesn’t lose momentum.
